Open Skill
A skill performed in an unpredictable environment
Football pass in game
Closed Skill
A skill which is not affected by the environment or performers within it. The skill tends to be done the same way each time. E.G tennis serve

Discrete skill
has a clear beginning and end

Discrete skills in a continuous routine

Movement is controlled by the performer and they choose when to begin

Externally Paced skill
The control of the movement skill is not determined by the performer, but by the environment (opponent). Ex. Receiving a pass in football
Simple skill
The player doesn’t need to process much info
100m freestyle swim
Complex skill
Lots of information is needed to be processed
A tennis serve
Low organisation skill
A basic skill that can be broken down easily into different phases so each part can be practised separately
Gymnastics sequence
High organisation skill
A skill that cannot be broken down easily and practised separately because the phases of the skill are closely linked
Golf swing

A learned action or behaviour with the intention of bringing about a pre-determined result with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy
Ability
An inherited, stable trait that determines an individual’s potential to learn or acquire a skill
