what are the tow different types of input devices?
- manual input device
- direct input devices
what is meant by manual input device ?
- data is input in the computer by hand ( people do most of the work )
what is meant by direct input devices ?
- Data is input into the computer directly by a machine / device ( there is minimal input by people )
what are the uses of a keyboard ?
- it is used to input :
- text
- numbers
- instructions
other uses : - inputting data into a application software like word , excel
- typing in commands like CTRL + C for copy
what are the advantages of keyboards in general ?
- easy and familiar to use
- fast entry of text into a document
what are the disadvantages of keyboards in general ?
- slow method when compared to direct data entry
from where does the QWERTY name come ?
- from the first 6 letters form the top row of alphabet keys in a QWERTY keyboard
what are the sections of a QWERTY keyboard ?
- alphabet keys
- function keys ( F1 ,F2 , F3,etc.)
- arrow keys
- number keys one is a nuemeric pad and the others are above the alphabet keys)
- command keys ( Delete , insert , end , page up and page down ,etc.)
what can a QWERTY keyboard keys cause of used for long period of time ?
- can cause health problems such as reptetive strain injury ( RSI)
what are ergonomic keyboards?
they are special keyboards that has been developed to overcome RSI , they are supposed to put your hands in a more natural position than traditional keyboards , their natural shape and they have a built-in handrest
what are concept keyboards ?
concept keyboards are flat boards that contains a grid of buttons , each button can be programmed to do whatever you want
an overlay sheet that contains pictures or symbols is placed above the grid so the user can tell what pressing on different areas will do
where is concept keyboards used ?
- in places where there is limited choices to choose from so its faster and more convinient to use concept keyboards , and places that will need u to choose ur choice fast such as fast food resturants
- mcdonald’s tills uses concept keyboards to make ordering faster and it is used in schools
- its also comes in handy where if somebody finds it difficult to use a normal keyboard or in places where a normal keyboard will get damaged by water or dust
what are the advantages of concept keyboards ?
- much faster in making non-text selections , such as menus in fast-food outlets
- the keyboard is waterproof so it can be used where there is dirt or the risk of spillage
what are the disadvantages of concept keyboards ?
- limited to the choices on the keyboard
- poor for numeric-input or text-input though some of them do include a neumric keypad so the operator can enter the amount sold
what is the use of a numeric keypad ?
- it is used to input data into :
- ATM
- POS terminals
- Chip and Pin
- mobile phone
what are the advantages of a numeric keypad ?
- straight forward to enter numeric data like pins or price at a POS terminal
what are the disadvantages of a numeric keypad ?
- keys can be too small
- difficult to type in letters ( older mobiles to letters)
what are light pens ?
- they are quite an old technology and is an alternative to mice or touchscreens or graphic tablets
- used to directly draw or select icons on the screens
How does a light pen work ?
- it works by picking up light from the computer screen and then sending signals to the computer telling exactly from where the light was picked up , this allows the computer to draw on the part of the screen where the pen picked up the light
what are the uses of light pens ?
- it used for selecting icons directly on the screen
- or for drawing directly on the screen
what are the advantages of light pens ?
- they are more accurate than touch screens as the point of the light pen is much thinner than a humans finger end point
- can be used in places where there is no room for mice or a graphic tablet
what are the disadvantages of light pens ?
- they are not as accurate as graphic tablets when producing drawings
- they only work on CRT (cathode ray tubes) screens so they cant work on TFT or LCD screens
- can be quite uncomfortable as your hand has to stay raised while working for long periods
what are the uses of a mouse ?
- to control the pointer on the screen to :
- selecting windows
- clicking icons
- menu options
- positioning pointer
what are the advantages of a mouse ?
- quicker to select an option when compared to keyboards
- easy to navigate through menu options compared to
- small , so it occupies a small space on your desktop
what are the disadvantages of a mouse ?
- it easily damaged
- needs a flat surface
- hard to use if user has limited finger or wrist movements
where do we use touchpads ?
- they are used in laptops as a pointing device
