1.2 : Impact of emerging technologies , Flashcards
1
Q
what is the defenition of emerging techonologies ?
A
- they are the techonolgies that are currently developing or that are expected to be available within the next 5-10 years , and is usually reserved for technologies that are expected to create signifcant social or economic effects
2
Q
what is the definition of artificial intelligence ?
A
- it is a machine or application which carries out tasks that requires some degree of intelligence , it dupilcates human tasks which require problem-solving and desicion- making skills
3
Q
in what areas are artificial intellgence being developed ?
A
- playing games : where computers are programmed to play against human players
- expert system : where computers are programmed to make disicions based on information they are given
for example : medical expert system can diagonse illiness based on symptomps entered - in voice recognition and translation : this type of AI involves computers that can uinderstand different human languages as they are spoken to them
- self-parking cars : currently on the market , but not fully independent , but they do make parllel parking easier
- Robotics : Robotic artificial intelligence is where a robot is programmed to imitate humans
PR2 (personal robot) : the most advanced research robot so far , its powerful hardware and software systems let it do things like : clean up tables , fold towels , fetch drinks from the fridge
4
Q
what are the negative impacts of AI ?
A
- many jobs could be lost in a number of areas , many jobs could be lost in manufacturing
- dependency on technology and the inability to carry out tasks done by robots
- loss of skills ,skills from previous generations have been lost , because humans have been replaced by machines and software applictions
5
Q
what guides driverelss cars ?
A
- they are guided by GPS , Wi-fi and lasor sensors
6
Q
what are the advantages of driverless cars ?
A
- they are probably safer as they are no driver to make mistakes that causes acciedents , driverless cars communicate with each other so if all cars were driverless then they could go faster safely and people would have more time to do thing which means that the econmy would benefit
- less trafic jams as the cars on the road are communicating with each other
- disabled people can benefit from driverless cars as they will gain some degree of mobility and independence
7
Q
what are the disadvantages of driverless cars ?
A
- some people will lose their jobs , like peope who drive for a living
- the software has to be robust and safe from hackers
- there are some privacy concerns because self-driving cars depend on collecting and sharing location data
- if an accident was to occur there is no legal standard yet to who is responsible
8
Q
what is meant by CAT ?
A
computer-assisted translation
9
Q
what are the common tools in a CAT ?
A
- spell checkers
- translation memory software
- language search-engine software
- voice input and voice recognition
- camera to detect text on image software
10
Q
what are the impact on everyday life is caused by CAT ?
A
- more accurate documents as most software have spell checkers , which would scan the world document and find spelling errors automatically , these errors can be corrected quickly and 100% error-free document can be produced .
- quicker translation , reduces time translating these documents
- very useful in some places like embassies , because a lot of foreign vistors are there and they will need to communicate with local officials
- more multilingual society as anybody with internet can essintialy learn a new language
- makes communicating with foriegn people easy , quicker and more efficient translations
- may not be 100% accurate , voice recognition might not detect the spoken word correctly
11
Q
What is authenication ?
A
- the process of verifiying the identity of a person or a process
12
Q
what are the properties used to verify a person in ict ?
A
- fingerprints
- retina ( which is the blood vessels at the back of the eye
- iris ( the coloured part around the pupil of the eye )
- face
- voice
13
Q
what are the impacts on everyday life that are caused by biometrics
A
- better security at the airports
- increased buliding security as most of them now use fingerprint locks so only authourized personnel can gain access
- reduced car theft as newer models have a fingerprint reader and it wont open if the fingerprint is not registered -
- more secure mobile phones as we use mobile phones a lot in our day to day life from cheking social media to online shopping we need to protect the valuable data we have which is why most mobile phone have either a fingerprint or face recongition lock
14
Q
where do we use fingerprints also ?
A
- employees can use it to sign in and out of work
- police uses fignerprints to authenicate a person identity
- some laptops now use it as way to gain access on the system
15
Q
Eye recongition ?
A
- the iris is scanned for identification purposes
- no physical contact is required which can be useful in some cultures
- airports uses iris to prevent people from using fraudlient identification papers
