Q

Novel clonality assays for T cell lymphoma in cats targeting the T cell receptor beta, T cell receptor delta, and T cell receptor gamma loci

A

The assessment of multiple T cell loci compensates for the potential shortcomings of individual assays. Using a combination of molecular clonality assays will increase the overall sensitivity for the diagnosis of T-cell lymphoma in cats, especially intestinal, and hepatic small cell lymphoma. Hepatic small cell lymphomas detected by the new TRG assay utilized rarely expressed V and J genes not recognized by previous assays, likely indicating unique biology of hepatic small cell lymphoma in cats.

Performance of lymph node cytopathology in diagnosis and characterization of lymphoma in dogs

A

Cytopathology may result in accurate diagnosis of lymphoma, but accuracy decreases when further characterization is needed. Cytopathology represents a fundamental aid in identifying lymphoma and can be used as a screening test to predict grade and phenotype. However, these results must be confirmed using other ancillary techniques, including flow cytometry, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Predicting outcomes in hyperthyroid cats treated with radioiodine

A

Age, sex, serum TSH concentration, bilateral and homogeneous 99mTc-pertechnetate uptake on scintigraphy, severity score, and percent 131I uptake are all factors that might help predict outcome of 131I treatment in hyperthyroid cats. Cats with persistent hyperthyroidism had many predictive factors that directly contrasted those of cats that developed 131I-induced hypothyroidism.

Q

Serial point-prevalence surveys to estimate antibiotic use (AU) in a small animal veterinary teaching hospital, November 2018 to October 2019

A

Serial point-prevalence surveys (PPS) can estimate AU in a large specialty hospital setting and identify targets for antimicrobial stewardship. The methodology developed during this study can be adapted for use in private practice, including large animal practice. Mirroring methods used in human healthcare, the data collection tool can also be used to describe AU nationally through completion of national PPS.

35
Q

The use of high-dose immunoglobulin M-enriched human immunoglobulin in dogs with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia

A

Treatment with high-dose Pentaglobin was well tolerated by dogs with primary IMHA but no significant advantage was found in this small study. Additional studies examining larger groups and subpopulations of dogs with primary IMHA associated with a poorer prognosis are warranted.

36
Q

Sedation with dexmedetomidine is associated with transient gallbladder wall thickening and peritoneal effusion in some dogs undergoing abdominal ultrasonography

A

Sedation with dexmedetomidine is associated with gallbladder wall thickening (> 2.0 mm) and peritoneal effusion that could be confused with pathologic etiologies.

A

Review

38
Q

Prevalence of sudden cardiac death in dogs with atrial fibrillation

A

Atrial fibrillation was associated with a higher prevalence of SCD in dogs. A history of syncope may be a useful predictor of SCD risk.

Younger age at diagnosis, larger left atrial size, and a history of syncope all were independent predictors of SCD in dogs with AF

39
Q

Bacterial infection in dogs with aspiration pneumonia at 2 tertiary referral practices

A

Lack of routine BALF collection hampers definitive recognition of bacterial infection in AP. Differences in dogs meeting veterinary vs human medical definitions for b-AP and usefulness of noninvasive markers warrant further study to improve understanding of the role of bacteria in AP.

40
Q

Prognostic value of left ventricular-arterial coupling (VAC) estimated using echocardiography in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease

A

Inappropriate VAC assessed based on echocardiographically-estimated Ea/Ees is associated with a worse prognosis in dogs with MMVD.

41
Q

Serum feline pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity and trypsin-like immunoreactivity concentrations in cats with experimentally induced chronic kidney disease

A

Decreased renal function has a clinically relevant impact on serum fTLI concentrations and potentially could interfere with a diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Serum fPLI concentration was not affected by experimentally induced CKD and thus serum fPLI may be used for the diagnosis of pancreatitis in cats with kidney disease. Additional studies are needed to verify these results in cats with naturally occurring CKD.

42
Q

Prospective evaluation of 5 urinary biomarkers as predictors of acute kidney injury in nonazotemic, hospitalized dogs

A

Kidney injury was common, irrespective of subsequent worsening of azotemia or death. The predictive value of individual urinary biomarkers was reduced by moderate sensitivities and specificities. SDMA showed moderate discriminatory utility for AKI prediction, and often displayed discordant results with sCr.

Frunevetmab = Solensia

45

46
Q

Immunoglobulin G and phosphatidylserine (PS) in regenerative and nonregenerative immune-mediated anemias of dogs

A

Immunoglobulin G and PS may promote destruction of nRBCs in PIMA dogs; PS may promote destruction of RBCs in IMHA dogs.

47
Q

Clinical features and outcomes in 38 dogs with cholelithiasis receiving conservative or surgical management

A

Medical treatment can be effective for management of cholelithiasis in dogs, with clinical presentation and cholelith location playing important roles in treatment decision-making.

Symptomatic cases had higher ALKP. GGT. ALT than incidental cases.

Higher proportion of symptomatic cases had choledocholithiasis than did incidental cases.

Cholelithiasis completely resolved in 4/8 medically treated, 5/7 of surgically treated, and 1/2 nontreated dogs.

MST 457.4 days, no significant difference between incidental and symptomatic dogs.

48
Q

Evaluation of hair and nail cortisol concentrations and associations with behavioral, physical, and environmental indicators of chronic stress in cats

A

The quantification of NCCs (nail cortisol concentrations) might improve identification and evaluation of chronic stress in cats. The variability of HCCs (hair cortisol concentrations) in individual cats warrants caution using this measurement in chronic stress studies.

Q

Clinical, laboratory and ultrasonographic findings differentiating low-grade intestinal T-cell lymphoma from lymphoplasmacytic enteritis in cats

A

Most clinical signs and laboratory results are similar between cats diagnosed with LGITL (low grade intestinal tract lymphoma) and LPE (lymphoplasmacytic enteritis). However, male sex, a longer duration of clinical signs and polyphagia might help clinicians distinguish LGITL from LPE. On ultrasonography, a rounded jejunal lymph node, and the presence of (albeit small volume) abdominal effusion tended to be more prevalent in cats with LGITL. However, a definitive diagnosis requires comprehensive histopathologic and phenotypic assessment.

52
Q

Leukocyte and cytokine variables in asymptomatic Pugs at genetic risk of necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME)

A

These data suggest an immunological underpinning to NME and a biologic rationale for future clinical trials that investigate novel diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic strategies for this disease.

53
Q

Outcomes of adjunctive radiation therapy for the treatment of mast cell tumors in dogs and assessment of toxicity: A multicenter observational study of 300 dogs

A

Our study supports the use of adjunctive radiation for the long-term control of incompletely or narrowly excised cutaneous and SCMCT in dogs. More moderate dose and fractionation protocols may be appropriate in the adjunctive treatment of low-risk MCT in dogs. Large multicenter prospective studies are required to establish the optimal dose and fractionation for MCT of different risk categories.

54
Q

Comparison of methods to monitor dogs with hypercortisolism treated with trilostane

A

Of all the 12 variables, Hp (serum haptoglobin), and to a lesser degree ALT and γGT (GGT), could be considered additional tools to the clinical picture to identify well-controlled and undercontrolled trilostane-treated dogs.

55
Q

Posaconazole treatment of refractory coccidioidomycosis in dogs

A

Posaconazole should be considered as a treatment option for dogs with refractory coccidioidomycosis. Monitoring of indicators of liver function or injury along with therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended to tailor dosage in the event of hepatic toxicosis.

56

57
Q

Evaluation of and the prognostic factors for cats with big kidney-little kidney syndrome

A

An increase in the length difference between kidneys can indicate UO ureteral obstruction), but cannot predict outcome for BKLK cats.

58
Q

Neuronal current imaging: An experimental method to investigate electrical currents in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy

A

The proposed MRI method detected neuronal currents in dogs with epileptic seizures and represents a potential new line of research to investigate neuronal currents possibly related to IE in dogs.

59
Q

Epidemiological, clinical, and electrophysiological findings in dogs and cats with traumatic brachial plexus injury: A retrospective study of 226 cases

A

Electrodiagnostic studies, particularly measurement of radial CMAP (compound muscle action potential) amplitude, are valuable diagnostic tests to refine the prognosis of these animals.

60
Q

Evaluation of a flash glucose monitoring system (FGMS) in nondiabetic dogs with rapidly changing blood glucose concentrations

A

In this model, there was limited agreement between the FGMS and reference standard BG measurements. The FGMS (measuring IG concentrations) was compared to peripheral BG concentrations, not brain-tissue glucose concentrations, and failed to reliably detect hypoglycemia.

61
Q

Polymorphisms in the serotonin transporter gene and circulating concentrations of neurotransmitters in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with myxomatous mitral valve disease

A

Selected SERT SNPs (5-HT transporter gene single nucleotide polymorphisms) associated with MMVD in Maltese dogs were not found in CKCS and only platelet count influenced serum 5-HT concentration. These SNPs are unlikely to be associated with MMVD pathophysiology or serum 5-HT concentration in CKCS. HPLC and ELISA serum 5-HT demonstrated good correlation but ELISA systematically underestimated 5-HT.

62
Q

Abdominal ultrasound and clinicopathologic findings in 22 cats with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency

A

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency often causes minimal to no sonographic pancreatic changes. Nonetheless, the findings of thin pancreatic parenchyma, pancreatic duct dilatation, or diffuse small intestinal dilatation with echogenic contents in cats with unexplained weight loss or unformed feces should raise clinical suspicion for EPI.

63
Q

Medical conditions associated with gastroduodenal ulceration or erosion in 168 dogs: 2008-2018

A

Administration of NSAID or glucocorticoid and gastrointestinal neoplasia or mechanical disease were associated with GUE in dogs. The potential predisposition of working breed dogs for GUE requires further investigation.

64
Q

Appetite-stimulating effects of once-daily omeprazole in cats with chronic kidney disease: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover trial

A

Once-daily omeprazole does not markedly increase appetite in cats with CKD and should not be used as a first-line treatment in the absence of evidence of gastrointestinal ulceration.

65
Q

Evaluation of hemostasis in hyperthyroid cats

A

Hyperthyroid cats have evidence of altered hemostasis that does not appear to be solely attributable to cardiac abnormalities, but no evidence of a hypercoagulable state. Findings suggest altered hemostasis resolves after RIT (radioactive iodine treatment). Hyperthyroid cats could have endothelial dysfunction as indicated by increased vWF : Ag (von willebrand factor antigen) which could potentiate thrombogenesis.

66
Q

Choledochal stenting for treatment of extrahepatic biliary obstruction in cats

A

Choledochal stenting was an effective treatment modality in cats with EHBO with few procedural complications and potential for prolonged survival, but substantial risk for recurrence of EHBO was identified.

68
Q

Clinical progression of cats with early-stage chronic kidney disease fed diets with varying protein and phosphorus contents and calcium to phosphorus ratios

A

Cats with early CKD developed hypercalcemia after long-term feeding of a highly P-restricted diet. Increasing dietary P and reducing Ca : P ratio maintained renal markers, while improving Ca-P balance. Cats with early CKD could benefit from moderately protein- and P-restricted diets.

69
Q

The effect of per os vs subcutaneous 123iodine administration on percentage thyroidal radioactive iodine uptake in normal cats

70
Q

A retrospective case series of clinical signs in 28 Beagles with Lafora disease

A

Lafora disease in Beagles causes significant behavioral changes, and mental decline as well as neurological deficits in addition to myoclonic episodes and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Nevertheless, a relatively normal life span can be expected.

Lafora disease is a neurological storage disease caused by an autosomal recessive genetic defect resulting in myoclonus as well as focal and generalized seizures.

71
Q

Clinical signs, duodenal histopathological grades, and serum high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) concentrations in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease

A

Serum HMGB1 could be a potential biomarker for diagnosing IBD and might be indicative of histopathologic severity in dogs, whereas serum CRP might be an indicator of clinical severity.

72
Q

Implantable vagus nerve stimulator settings and short-term adverse effects in epileptic dogs

A

Coughing is a common adverse effect of VNS in dogs and generally is well tolerated, particularly if current is increased slowly and other stimulation parameters are adapted for effect.

Implantable vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) devices can be used to treat epilepsy in dogs.

73
Q

Serum phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain (pNF-H) as a diagnostic biomarker for progressive myelomalacia in dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation

A

Serum pNF-H is a promising biomarker for antemortem diagnosis of PMM (progressive myelomalacia) in dogs with acute, severe thoracolumbar myelopathy secondary to Type I IVDH.

74
Q

Retrospective study of aldosterone and progesterone secreting adrenal tumors in 10 cats

A

The presence of multiple corticosteroid abnormalities should be considered in cats with aldosterone secreting adrenal tumors, especially those with concurrent diabetes mellitus. Both surgical and medical management can result in long-term survival, although diabetic remission was documented only in cats undergoing adrenalectomy.

75
Q

Clinical features and amino acid profiles of dogs with hepatocutaneous syndrome or hepatocutaneous-associated hepatopathy

A

Specific AA biomarkers provide additional diagnostic utility in ACHES. Data suggests that HCH (hepatocutaneous associated hepatopathy) is an early stage, and SND a later stage manifestation of ACHES.

76
Q

Efficacy of medical dissolution for suspected struvite cystoliths in dogs

A

Results support a medical dissolution trial for dogs with suspected struvite cystoliths. If no reduction in urolith size or number occurs by 1 month, a nonstruvite composition is likely, and alternative interventions should be considered. Dogs presenting with urethral obstructions should not be considered candidates for medical dissolution.

77
Q

A comparative time-dependent study of hematology, serum gastrin (SG) concentrations, and gastroscopic assessment of meloxicam-induced gastric ulceration in dogs

A

Gastroscopy is the gold standard for early descriptive diagnosis of gastric ulcerations in dogs, and SG is a good indicator for meloxicam-induced gastric ulcers in dogs and can predict the gastroscopic score of the lesion.

78
Q

Effects of desmopressin acetate administration in healthy dogs receiving prednisolone

A

Administration of desmopressin to dogs receiving prednisolone significantly decreased water intake and serum sodium concentration, and increased USG. Our results suggest that, in some dogs, desmopressin ameliorates the most important adverse effect of prednisolone noted by owners, but that hyponatremia is an important complication associated with desmopressin use.

80
Q

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease

A

We showed that CEUS allows discrimination between IBD affected dogs and healthy dogs by evaluation of time-intensity curves, but did not provide useful information for monitoring therapeutic response. The qualitative assessment identified no significant differences between healthy and affected dogs, or between dogs before and after treatment.

81
Q

Adjusted calcium concentration (aCa) as a predictor of ionized hypocalcemia in hypoalbuminemic dogs

A

A low aCa was useful to detect ionized hypocalcemia in hypoalbuminemic nonhyperphosphatemic dogs. A normal aCa indicated that moderate ionized hypocalcemia was unlikely.

82
Q

Association between serum fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) concentration and development of hyperphosphatemia in normophosphatemic dogs with chronic kidney disease

A

Increased FGF-23 concentration in normophosphatemic dogs with CKD was associated with significant risk of development of hyperphosphatemia, independent of CKD stage, and of the progression of CKD. Future research focusing on whether interventions that decrease FGF-23 secretion will slow the development of hyperphosphatemia and CKD progression is needed.
