2020 Flashcards
Wang, Kok - metformin
Intracanal metformin promotes healing by supressing LPS-induced iNOS and NO production by monocytes. This modulation also inhibits Chemokine/ligand synthesis by monocytes (this helps bc sometimes defense responses induce tissue destruction and hinder resolution of PA disease.
Torres, Antunes - MMPs
Syst review found that PA lesion tissue had high concentraiton of MMPs and their expression decreased following mechanical/chemical preparation. MMP1, 2, 3, 8 were associated with a higher risk of PA lesions.
Mainkar - altered sensation
Incidence of altered sensation after periapical surgery appears to be relatively high (14%) with a higher incidence found in premolars compared with molars.
Sedgley - B cortical bone
LFOV CBCT was highly discriminatory and accurately predicted intraoperative buccal cortical bone status. Prevalence of intact buccal cortical plate was 49%, dehiscence 7%, fenestration 44%. (fen still has crestal bone intact, better prognosis). Accuracy for all variables was over 80%.
Huang Lui - micro sx healing/survival
Endo microsurgery results in high long-term (5-9 years) healed (78%) and survival (95%) rate. Teeth classified as healed in the 1-2 year review mostly remained healed at 5-9 year review.
Sakir - changes in mx sinus
risk for pathologic changes in maxillary sinus was 62X greater in teeth with AP than in areas of healthy teeth.
Coste, Bastos - survival of replantation
overall survival after replantation of perm teeth was 50% after 5.5 years. Advanced stages of root development, together with the increase in the patient’s age at the moment of trauma, up to the limit of 16, were good prognostic factors for tooth survival.
Parirokh, Abbott - response to ice in DM
there was a sig correlation between the reduction of maxillary premolar teeth responses to the cold test in diabetes patients >45 years of age.
Glickman - ability to detect lesions
lesion size, not degree of cortical involvement, significantly affected the observers’ ability to accurately detect lesions. In other words, lesions confined to cancellous bone can be detected radiographically at a high rate.
(this contradicts classic bender and seltzer article 1961 that says lesions could not be visualized if the lesions were confined within cancellous bone. Could be seen if sufficient bone tissue was removed to erode the inner surface of the bone cortex.)
Krell - cracked teeth survival/success
cracked tooth 1 year follow up: 88% survival, 82% success. The presence of a perio pocket associated to a crack resulted in higher risk of tooth loss. (Same success percentage of earlier study!)
Yavorek, Ibrahim - survival of crowns
probability of survival of all teeth with crowns placed was 90%. PFM crowns exhibited a higher rate requiring RCT, as well as crowns placed on pts <50.
Nixdorf, Law - persistent post-op pain
progression of persistent post-RCT pain occurred in 19% of patients. However, 56% of patients improved without additional interventions. Both pts that improved and those that did not had mixture of odontogenic/non etiologies.
Siqueira - mandibular incisors w/ e. faecalis
after preparation of mand incisors with oval canals infected with E faecalis, bacteria positive samples were significantly higher in the contracted cavity group (86%) compared with conventional cavity group (50%).
Sun, Wu - clinical symptoms and specific microbes
on exploring the relationship between clinical symptoms and specific microorganisms in advanced dental caries: Lactobacillus was positively correlated to referred pain, the cold test, the percussion response, and diagnosis.
-Neg assiations between relative abundance of Bacteroidia and Gammaproteobacteria and referred pain, Gamma and EPT, and actinomyces and propionibaceteria and diagnosis.
Diogenes, Hargreaves - Regendo survival rate
2 year follow up on teeth with Regendo had survival rate of 92% and success of 84%. Higher Age, carious etiology of PN (versus trauma or anomaly), CaOH (compared to TAP and DAP), and low NaOCl concentration (1.5% vs 6%) were significant predictors of failure.
