2017 Mod9 Flashcards
Define the following terms:
A. Atom
The smallest chemical unit of matter.
B. Molecule
Two or more atoms linked together to make a substance with unique properties
C. photosynthesis
The process by which green plants and some other organisms use the energy of sunlight and simple chemicals to produce their own food
D. metabolism
The sum total of processes in an organism that convert energy and matter from outside sources and uses that energy and matter to some stain the organisms life functions
E. Receptors
Special structures that allow living organisms to sense the conditions of their internal or external environment
F. Precocial
Offspring born ready to fend for itself
G. Altricial
Born help us in some way, I can’t hear, see, or regulate body temperature
H. Cell
The smallest unit of life in creation
What are the four criteria for life?
- All lifeforms have DNA
- all eat/absorb energy
- All lifeforms can sense changes and respond accordingly
- All lifeforms reproduce
What does DNA provide to a living organism
A “blueprint”
Compared to other molecules, is a DNA big or small
Small
Does DNA stores information more efficiently or less efficiently than a computer
More efficiently
DNA is made up of two basic parts: the backbone in the nucleotide basis.
A. Which part stores that information?
B. Which part forms the double-helix structure
A. The nucleotide basis
B. The backbone
Which nucleotide will link to adenine? Which will link to cytosine?
Adenine - thymine
Cytosine - guanine
One half of a portion of DNA has the following sequence:
cytosine, guanine, adenine, guanine, thymine, thymine
what is the sequence of nucleotide on the other half of this portion
guanine, cytosine, thymine, cytosine, adenine, adenine
