2017 Mod14 Flashcards
Define the following terms:
A. Veins
Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart
B. Arteries
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
C. Capillaries
Tiny, thin walled blood vessels that allow the exchange of gases and nutrients between the blood and cells and is located between arteries and veins
What purpose do the Lungs serve?
They oxygenate the blood
What purpose does the heart serve ?
It pumps the blood
How many chambers are in the human heart? Name them
Four.
1= right atrium 2= left atrium 3= right ventricle 4= left ventricle
What is special about a four chambered heart as compared to three chambered heart or two chambered heart?
Four chambered hearts are very efficient
In what kind of blood vessels does the blood transfer oxygen to the cells and picks up waste
In the capillaries
When deoxygenated blood is returning to the heart, into what chamber does it enter the heart
The right atrium
After entering the heart, the deoxygenated blood is then transferred to a second chamber. What chamber is that?
The right ventricle
When deoxygenated blood leaves the heart, where does it go?
The lungs
When oxygenated blood comes into the heart, what chamber does it fill?
The left atrium
Once the oxygenated blood is back in the heart, it is then transferred to another chamber. What chamber is this?
The left ventricle
When oxygenated blood leaves the heart, through what artery does it first travel
The aorta
Most veins carry what kind of blood? Are there any exceptions to this general rule
Deoxygenated. Yes
