2017 Mod15 Flashcards
Define the following terms:
A. gland
A group of cells that prepare and release chemicals for used by the body
B. Vaccine
A weekend in active version of the pathogen that simulate the body’s production of antibodies that can destroy the pathogens
C. Hormone
A chemical messenger released into the blood stream that sends signals to distance cells, causing them to change their behavior in specific ways
Describe the main function of each of the three systems you studied in this module.
Lymphatic=
Endocrine=
Urinary=
Fight disease.
the gland that controls other glands.
regulates water and chemical levels in the blood
What do you kind of basic structure make up the lymphatic system? In which of the structures is the lymph actually cleaned?
Lymph vessels and nodes. Lymph nodes
How does lymph get pumped through the lymphatic system
Through muscle movement
What gland produces tears? What two purposes to tears serve?
Lacrimal glands. They clean the eye from bacteria and give chemical relief for sadness
What three kinds of cells in the lymph nodes fight infection?
B cells, T cells, and macrophages
What kind of cells in the lymph nodes produces antibodies?
B cells
What kind of cell helps the lymphatic system “remember” an infection so that you can fight the infection better next time?
The memory B cells
Does it do any good to take a vaccine when you were sick with the disease the vaccine is supposed to fight
Not much
Explain how I kidney functions. Start with the blood going into a kidney and end with that leaving the kidney
First the blood enters the kidney then the kidney filters out proteins minerals and such then it leaves the kidney and goes into the nephron which adds the good stuff back into the blood
What does a kidney do with any excess water chemicals? where do they go?
Down to the bladder
What is the purpose of dialysis?
To filter your blood, if the kidneys don’t work
Hypothalamus =
D controls the pituitary gland
Thyroid
A produces hormones that regulate the basal metabolic rate
Parathyroid
G produces a hormone that destroys bone to release calcium
Pituitary
E produces hormones that control many of the endocrine glands
Adrenal
B produces cortisone, Which causes the liver to release glucose into the blood
pancreas
C produces insulin, which enables glucose to enter the cells
Thymus
F produces a hormone that simulates the production of T cells
Which gland is often called the “master of endocrine gland”?
The pituitary gland
