Endocrinology of pregnancy
What enzymes are released in the acrosome reaction?
Hyalauronidase and Proteolytic enzymes
What is layer of cells on the outside of a blastocyte?
Trophoblast cells - forms chorion (placenta)
What causes epididymal secretions?
Androgens
What factor promotes angiogenesis during decidualisation?
TGF-b
What is inactive and acitive forms of vitamin D called?
Calciferol –> Calcitriol
What does calcium bind to on PT, causing what to occur?
It binds to calcium sensing receptors - which inhibits PTH secretion
Normal serum range of Ca2+
2.2-2.6 mmol/L
Apart from affecting calcium what else does vitamin D?
Increases phosphate reabsorption in the gut
What are the causes for low PTH?
Autoimmune
Magnesium deficiency - required for PTH to work
What are the diagnostic features of high Ca2+ but low PTH characteristic of?
hypercalcaemia of malignancy
What is used to treat vitamin D deficient patients with renal failure?
Alfacalcidol - 1a hydroxycholecalciferol
