2- Structure Of The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the human nervous system comprised of?
The central nervous and system and the peripheral nervous system
What are the components of the CNS?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system further broken down into?
The somatic and autonomic nervous systems
What is the function of the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system?
Somatic nervous system:
- innervates skin, joints and skeletal muscle
- responsible for movement and voluntary action
Autonomic nervous system:
- innervates cardiovascular system, organs and smooth muscles
- responsible for involuntary actions
- heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, breathing
What are the branches of the autonomic nervous system and what are their functions?
Sympathetic nervous system
- fight or flight
- increase HR and BP
- decrease digestion
Parasympathetic nervous system:
- rest and digest
- decrease HR and BP
- increase digestion
