(2) Pediatric language disorders Flashcards
Mixed language disorder
troubles with receptive AND expressive language
T/F: you can have an expressive or receptive language disorder alone
FALSE
Only expressive lang disorder. Receptive lang disorder doesn’t exist
Language disorder: due to a _________ (known/unknown) biomedical condition
known
(many conditions associated)
developmental language disorder (DLD)
functional language disorder, cannot be attributed to hearing loss, intellectual impairment, neuro issue, etc.
DLD affects about ___% of kindergarteners
7
when it comes to a language disorder and DLD, which is functional, and which is organic?
Language disorder: organic
Developmental language disorder: functional
saying someone has a “language disorder” as opposed to “DLD” indicates that
it’s associated with a medical issue, disability, etc.
what is the most frequent disability among children?
(5x more common than autism)
DLD: Developmental Language Disorder
If DLD is still present at age ____, it will likely be a life-long condition
5
List some at-risk populations for DLD
premature birth, low birth weight, infants who require hospitalization, family history of language or literacy problems
T/F: kids who are late talkers will likely catch up with early intervention
TRUE
___________ and _________ errors are the hallmark characteristics of DLD
morphology
syntax
(“her nice”)
List more key characteristics of DLD
smaller vocab, fewer semantic features, immature social communication, difficulty understanding and applying pragmatic rules, etc.
DLD is/is not due to low intelligence, but it does/does not affect social, academic, and vocational outcomes
is NOT
DOES
Main difficulty for DLD
restricted ability to understand/use symbolic language
Do people with DLD ever catch up?
No. They’ll always be learning but behind where they should be
4 assessment types
hearing screening, oral mechanism, motor speech, and voice and fluency
What is a norm-referenced assessment?
Comparing client’s communication to a sample of peers, looking at picture books and asking questions about the pictures, very standardized, must follow rules of specific test (not always the best way, sometimes insurance companies want these)
What is a criterion referenced assessment?
compare skills to a pre-determined set of expectation (criterion school), a lot of times it’s 80%, may or may not use standardized administration procedures but no standard scores, can be administered in natural environment, helps figure out what client does or does not have and guides intervention plan (unlike norm-referenced)
four types of assessment tools to memorize (these are not all):
case history, norm-referenced assessment, criterion referenced assessment, observational tools
prioritize lang goals based on what will yield the greatest benefit now or in the future?
now
follow developmental sequence, _____-____ should be family centered
birth - 5
treatment should be age, ___________ level, and ___________ appropriate
cognitive
culturally
treatment should target both _________ and _____________ communication skills
social
academic
