There are six major causes of acquired brain injury?
trauma, stroke, anoxia, infection, tumours and surgery
What are the types of trauma?
- penetration and crushing of brain tissue
- open fractures
- closed trauma
Most common type?
closed trauma
It is important to understand some of the limitations and considerations that result from damage to different areas of the brain. Injury to the brain stem may result in difficulties with?
breathing, heart rate, swallowing, sight and hearing, sweating, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, alertness, sleep and balance
What activities can help people with ABI maintain movement and function?

3 Barriers to participation in PA?
- Ongoing pain/fatigue (physical constraint)
- Fear (social constraint)
- Transportation, mobility, financial and time constraints
4 considerations for PA and programming for ABI?
- Don’t overwork yourself. Make sure you wait the proper amount of time before RTP.
- Keep in mind balance ability
- Exercises should reduce risk of trauma to head - re injury is a danger!
- Create welcoming environment - damage to brain can cause emotion and cognitive difficulties.
