Proportion of fat to lean body tissue
What is BMR and what can it depend on?
Basal Metabolic Rate - how fast energy is being used,
Depends on sex, age, physique
What is BMI? What does it indicate and how do you work it out?
Body Mass Index
Ratio of weight to height
Weight(KG) / (height m )^2
Define Obesity
When a persons percentage body fat is over 40%
Or your BMI is over 30
What is the limitation to BMI being used?
Muscles is more dense than fat so can calculate athletes as obese.
What are the 7 food classes?
Carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water
How do the 7 food classes impact sport?
Carbs - provide energy
Fats - energy source for low intensity exercise
Protein - growth and repair
Minerals - bone growth, energy metabolism and nerve function
Vitamins - energy metabolism and formation of tissues
Fibre - reduce blood cholesterol, prevents constipation
Explain why diets would change for different athletes?
Endurance based athletes need more fats and carbohydrates for energy
Power/Strength athletes will need to increase protein
State the BMI measurements for: Underweight Healthy Over weight Obese (Class I) Obese (Class II) Morbidly obese
