  • If you have high blood sugar (diabetes), you will need to watch your blood sugar closely.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are using this medicine.
  • Avoid or limit drinking alcohol to less than 3 drinks a day. Drinking too much alcohol may raise your chance of liver disease.
  • This drug may cause harm to the unborn baby if you take it while you are pregnant. If you are pregnant or you get pregnant while taking this drug, call your doctor right away.
  • Use birth control that you can trust to prevent pregnancy while taking this drug.

  • If you take cholestyramine or colestipol, take them at least 4 hours before or 1 hour after this drug.
  • Allergic reactions have happened with this drug. Rarely, some reactions can be very bad or life-threatening.
  • A very bad and sometimes deadly reaction has happened with this drug. Most of the time, this reaction has signs like fever, rash, or swollen glands with problems in body organs like the liver, kidney, blood, heart, muscles and joints, or lungs.

  • Do not switch between different forms of this drug without first talking with the doctor.
  • Talk with your doctor before you drink alcohol.
  • If you also take colesevelam, take it at least 4 hours after you take this drug.
  • This drug may raise the chance of death from heart disease.
  • You may get sunburned more easily. Avoid sun, sunlamps, and tanning beds. Use sunscreen and wear clothing and eyewear that protects you from the sun.

Metformin

  • Rarely, metformin may cause an acid health problem in the blood (lactic acidosis). The risk of lactic acidosis is higher in people with kidney problems and in people who take certain other drugs like topiramate. The risk is also higher in people with liver problems or heart failure, in older people (65 or older), or with alcohol use.
  • Talk with your doctor before you drink alcohol.
  • If diarrhea happens or you are throwing up, call your doctor. You will need to drink more fluids to keep from losing too much fluid.
  • Be careful in hot weather or while being active. Drink lots of fluids to stop fluid loss.
