2. Cellular Transport Flashcards
What are the types of lipids?
Phospholipids, sphingolipids, and cholesterol
How does cholesterol affect the cell membrane?
It decreases the fluidity of it
What are lipid rafts?
microdomains of the membrane, which are rich in cholesterol and sphingolipids; they are though to spatially organize signalling molecules at the membrane to promote kinetically favourable interactions and are necessary for signal transductions
What is osmolarity?
Osmolarity is the measurement of the number of particles per volume of fluid
What is the eq for osmolarity?
molarity (mol/L)x#particles/molecule (osmo/mol)
What is the tonicity of a solution?
The solution’s ability to change the volume of a cell by altering the water content
What is the membrane permeable and impermiable to?
Permeable to: small, uncharged molecules, and to water
Imperm to: large, water soluble molecules (proteins, sugars, etc) and charged molecules
What is primary active transport?
The use of ATP to move molecules against their conc gradient
What is secondary active transport?
the use of energy in conc gradients to move molecules across the membrane
