2-6 Pelvic Muscles Flashcards
What are the 6 muscles of the pelvis?
- Obturator internus
- Piriformis
- Puborectalis mm
- Pubococcygeus
- Iliococcygeus
- Coccygus
What muscles make up the levator ani?
Puborectalis
- pubovaginalis/puboprostaticus
Pubococcygeus
Iliococcygeus
What muscles make up the pelvic diaphragm?
Levator ani
- puborectalis
- pubococcygeus
- iliococcygeus
Coccygeus
What is the main function of the pelvic diaphragm?
c. The main action of the pelvic diaphragm is to support the pelvic viscera and resist increases in abdominal pressure (for example, during coughing, sneezing, etc).
What provides support for the midline structures of the pelvis?
f. A second diaphragm, the urogenital diaphragm provides support for midline structures: urethra, vagina (female), and prostate (male).
What passes through the pelvic diaphragm?
e. The pelvic diaphragm is incomplete centrally to allow for passage of viscera from pelvis to perineum; rectum and urethra and in the female, the vagina (urogenital/levator hiatus).
What is the innervation for the puborectalis? What kind of contraction does it have?
S3
S4
Tonically contracted
What is the puborectal sling?
Puborectalis mm
- Muscle fibers pass posterior to the rectum and merge with fibers from the opposite side, forming the puborectal sling around the rectum. The puborectalis is tonically contracted to maintain the anorectal junction; an important mechanism in maintaining fecal continence.
What forms the pubovaginalis or puboprostaticus mm?
- Midline slips of muscle from puborectalis form supporting muscles:
a. Puboprostaticus (male)
b. Pubovaginalis (female)
What is the innervation of the pubococcygeus muscle?
