What is the definition of cause?
A person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon, or condition.
What does effect mean?
A change that results when something is done or happens.
What are three causes of the Civil War?
- Slavery.
- State’s rights.

What are two effects of the Civil War?
- End of slavery.
- Country is reunited.
How did the Civil War impact the role of women?
Women took on new jobs such as nurses and ran businesses.
How did the Civil War impact voting rights?
Black men were allowed to vote for the first time, and inspired women many years later to fight for their right to vote.
The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying or abridging a citizen’s right to vote “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” It was ratified on February 3, 1870, as the third and last of the Reconstruction Amendments.
What was the Gilded Age?
1870s-1890s in American history that saw large amounts of change in the economy and industries such as energy, transportation, and manufacturing.
How did the Gilded Age change American workers?
Workers began to unionize in response to hard working conditions.
What caused businesses to expand and grow during the Gilded Age?
More demand for goods led to more companies hiring more workers, including women and non-white men.
What led to the growth of cities in the United States during the 1870s-1890s?
- The end of the Civil War encouraged many to move to cities for jobs.
- Larger waves of immigration from Europe.
Between 1880 and 1900, cities in the United States grew at a dramatic rate. Owing most of their population growth to the expansion of industry, U.S. cities grew by about 15 million people in the two decades before 1900.
What caused more Americans to want regulation of big companies?
Corruption of railroad and food tycoons and unsafe labor practices.
The rise of industrial capitalism saw the exploitation of workers, including low wages, long hours, and poor working conditions. Labor movements advocated for regulations to protect workers’ rights, leading to the establishment of labor laws, minimum wage laws, and the recognition of labor unions.

The New Deal was a series of programs and reforms aimed at economic recovery and financial reform. These included the establishment of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to regulate the stock market and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to protect bank deposits.
Why did the United States wait until 1917 to intervene in World War I?
Isolationism
The United States maintained a policy of isolationism during World War I, with President Woodrow Wilson declaring the country neutral in 1914. Eventually, Wilson’s viewpoint changed as he saw that the war threatened to spread across the Atlantic Ocean.
What impact did World War II have on racial equality in the United States?
Non-white soldiers served overseas and upon returning wanted the same rights and treatment as white soldiers.
