A

In 1774, delegates from 12 of Britain’s 13 American colonies met in Philadelphia to discuss America’s future under growing British aggression.

Georgia was the only colony that did not attend.

The First Continental Congress’s most important decision was to call for a Second Continental Congress to meet the following spring, if necessary.

Why was the Second Continental Congress important?

A

In 1775, Colonial representatives convene in Philadelphia to establish a Continental army and elect George Washington as its Commander-in-Chief.

The delegates also draft the Olive Branch Petition and send it to King George III, hoping to reach a peaceful resolution. Refusing to hear the petition, the King declares the American colonies in revolt.

A

July 4th 1776, the Continental Congress votes to declare independence from Great Britain.

The document contains a long list of complaints against Great Britain, and states the people of the United States of America had the right to break the political bands that tied them to Great Britain and form a new government where the people would rule themselves.

A

December of 1776, Washington sneak attacks British troops in Trenton, New Jersey.
