1c Flashcards
what transitions are we focussing on
dd trnasitions
what are the rules in uvvvis
delta S = 0
delta L = +- 1
in a centrosymmetric system: transisitons must occur between orbitals of different symmetry: aka gerade to ungerade!!
what transitions does uvvis spec analyse
dd transitions in transition metal complexes
dd transitions are often coloured in transition metal complexes bc
they occur in the visible region
how are the d energy levels split
dz2 and dx2-dy2 are higher in energy bc they lie on the cartesian axis,, and experience greater M L repulsion as theyre aligned with the L.
separation between the dz2,,, dx2dy2 and the day,dzy and dxy isss
delta o if its an octahedral complex
what affects delta o
the ligands idenstity
spectrochem series!!! starts at weak field and goes to strong field : descibe what goes where
I_ < Br < Cl < F < O2- < H2O < NH3 < CN < PR3 < CO
weak to strong field
pi donor to sigma donor to strong sigma donor and pi acceptor (pi acids)
jorgensens rules of average environments : whats it all about
when u have a complex,, the ligands can interchange with the ligands in its environment ,, ligands in the complex can be substituted with ligands in the solution as there are more of them.
the ligands have different field strengths meaning that delta O chnages when they interchange!! changing the observations we see.
