Nearly 500,000 are summoned each year
What is the normal period of jury service?
The normal period is 2 weeks
What may happen to someone who doesn’t respond to their jury summons?
They may be prosecuted

12 people make up a jury
What wage do jurors get?
They are not paid, except expenses
Where are jurors chosen randomly from?
they are selected randomly from the electoral roll
What does the Juries Act 1974 set out?
Sets out eligibility of jurors:
- Must be aged 18-70
- Must be registered on the electoral roll
- Must have lived in the UK for 5 years
What does the Criminal Justices Act 2003 set out?
Sets out disqualifications of jurors:
- Bail
- Convictions of life
- Convictions in past 10 years
- Mental health problems
What is deferral?
When someone delays jury service for up to 12 months
When may someone be deferred from jury service?
- An exam
- An operation
- A holiday (must be already booked)
When may someone be excused from jury service?
- Someone who has done jury service in the past two years
- Members of the armed forces
- People over 65
What is jury vetting?
Jury vetting is the checking of a jury member before the trial
What are the two types of jury vetting?
- A CRB check
- A more detailed check known as an ‘authorised jury check’
Why does jury challenging happen?
Jury challenging happens to prevent bias
What is the main role of the jury?
To return a verdict of guilty or not. Must be unanimous or majority.
