‘Name and Shame’ ran by the NOTW (2000). Followed murder of Sarah Payne, and led to the sex offenders register

What are the advantages of the media?

A
  • Helps inform the Government of public concerns. Eg, The Snowdrop Campaign. The media supported a pressure group, which led to the banning of hand guns.
  • Raises public awareness. Essential for the Government to feel pressured into making reforms

  • Newspapers can show political bias. Eg the Sun supports conservative views
  • Newspapers are out to make money. They will publish stories to gain readership
