What is a pressure group?

A group of people who share similar ideas and campaign for law reform

What are some examples of methods that pressure groups can use?

They want to further the interests of a particular body of people. Eg the National Union of Teachers (NUT, Law Society

A
They want to further a particular ideal. Eg Jamie Oliver school dinners campaign

What is an insider pressure group?
A
They have access to decision makers such as MPs

What is an outsider pressure group?
A
Unlikely to have access to decision makers

What are advantages of pressure groups?
A
- They are able to raise awareness of their cause. Eg AllOut, LGBT group that uses new media
- They remind Parliament of issues, such as environmental pressure groups
- The law will benefit from the vast knowledge from the group, EG Jamie Oliver has nutritional expertise

What are the disadvantages of pressure groups?
A
- They are biased, EG Fathers4Justice are anti-mom
- They may resort to undesirable tactics that may be criminal
- The opinions may only represent a small minority
