The airplane is equipped with either a gravity fed standard fuel system (40Usable) or long range system (50Usable). Both systems consist of two vented fuel tanks (one in each wing) a four position selector valve, fuel strainer, manual primer, and a carburetor.

Describe the path fuel goes once it enters the tank (C172)

Answer 2

Fuel enters through a vented cap and is then directed towards the fuel selector, from the fuel selector it is gravity fed into the fuel strainer where from there it can go two ways. The primary path leads into the carburetor where air is mixed with fuel then sent towards the engine for combustion. The secondary path is used only if the primer is used. Suction will pull fuel from the strainer and sent directly to the cylinder heads for easier starting in cold weather conditions.
