Failure to modernise- British share in world markets dropped 15% from 1950-1970

Failed to condemn Vietnam war lost many young voters

Plans to move away from stop-go policies lead to deflatory measures

Attempt to join EEC showed fall in status of Britain and alienated a lot of his party

Showed weakness in foreign policy (Rhodesia/ EEC/ Vietnam)

A

Man of the people- from lower middle classes and attended Oxford

Wide base of support- first Tory leader to be elevated through more democratic means

Modern- seen as fresh blood to rejuvenate nation

‘Selsdom man’ - breath of fresh air who campaigned for free market economy

How did Labour policies result in them losing 1970 election

A

Failed to control inflation - 12% in 1970

Introduced immigration controls in 1968- lost them left wing voters while RW voters felt they were t harsh enough

High taxes- 91% for highest earners
40% for middle classes

People unhappy with liberal legislation- saw it as loose and disregarding traditional morals
