Man of the people- from lower middle classes and attended Oxford
Wide base of support- first Tory leader to be elevated through more democratic means
Modern- seen as fresh blood to rejuvenate nation
‘Selsdom man’ - breath of fresh air who campaigned for free market economy

Failed to control inflation - 12% in 1970
Introduced immigration controls in 1968- lost them left wing voters while RW voters felt they were t harsh enough
High taxes- 91% for highest earners
40% for middle classes
People unhappy with liberal legislation- saw it as loose and disregarding traditional morals
