-rejected societal values of their parents generation and distrusted politics
-wanted to change the culture by living differently
-all groups wanted to change society but the society they wanted and the methods they used were vastly different
-the major movements were hippies and radical student groups

-wanted to live in communal societies, believed in peace and a simple way of life (rejected working hard within the system to earn. money and buy more goods)
-some partook in mind altering drugs whilst many supported the wider sexual freedom that marriage gave
-the most famous hippie gathering in the 1960’s was the Woodstock festival in 1969
features of radical student groups
-wanted to change society in the USA to produce a more equal world
-aimed to end Vietnam war
-one of these groups was called the student democratic society set up in 1960’s. Their Port Huron statement stated that the government had forgotten the terms of the constitution that ruled everybody as equal
