-archetype first emerged in the mid 19th century
-In appearance, a Southern Belle would have been a fair skinned beauty, dressed in the latest fashions of the time. However, her interest in keeping up with these changing fashions would never have detracted from her familial role - as wife, mother and housekeeper.

Chivalric attitude to women
Chivalry is defined as polite and honest behaviour, particularly that of a man towards a woman.
Derived from the late Latin word caballarius (meaning ‘horseman’), the word connotates notions of knightly valour and heroism, rendering the woman in question the ‘damsel in distress’.
New Orleans Louisiana
-founded by French colonists in 1718, and was the territorial capital of French Louisiana, before it became part of the United States.
