#19-Production Flashcards

1
Q

What is GPP?

A

Gross primary production

  • total amount of carbon formed by autotrophs
  • depends on the rate of photosynthesis

Q

What happens when you have lots of leaf layers?

A

The more shading you have, the rate of each added leaf layer decreases

Q

What is NPP

A

Net primary productivity
Biomass gained by the plant and the energy left over is use for growth
- GPP-respiration

Q

Why is the storage of carbon good?

A

Because it can allow regrow to of plant is a disaster occurs

Q

What is NDVI?

A

Normal sized difference vegetation index
Estimates how green the landscape is
- soil has a low LDVI, vegetation has a high one

Q

What is the NEE?

A

Net ecosystem exchange production
Change in the concentration of CO2 can be measured in closed chambers
More refined estimate of NPP
- NEE= GPP-(AR+HR) measures weather or not the CO2 is going in or out of the system

Q

What is the eddy correlation ?

A

NEE is estimated by measuring CO2 at various height in a plant canopy

Q

What controls NPP in terrestrial ecosystems?

16
Q

What is NPP in lakes limited by?

A

P and N availability

17
Q

Why are NPP in rivers low?

A

Since they flow, there isn’t enough phytoplankton growth

18
Q

What is the NPP in oceans limited by?

A

N

- P sinks

19
Q

What is net secondary production?

A

Ingestion- respiration- egestion

- depends on food quality and digest ability

20
Q

What is primary production?

A

Chemical energy produce by autotrophs during photosynthesis and chemosynthesis
- rate of primary production
