1.8 Chile Flashcards
What type of plate boundary does chile lie on
Convergent
What’s so dangerous about chile?
Major EQ and volcanic eruptions
EQ can trigger avalanches, rock avalanches and landslides
What are some stresses?
Angle of slope
Rainwater/saturation
Vibration
Earthquakes
Sea, cliff erosion
What are some strengths?
Lubricant layers
Tree/vegetation roots
Consolidation of material
Porosity if soil
What are factors that promote landslides
Rock type - weak saturated material or shattered rock is more likely to move than solid bedrock
Permeability - How permeable is the surface?
Prolonged rainfall - this will saturate the soil and encourage movement.
Buildings - increase weight in the slope and add to downward gravity
Shield volcanoes?
Constructive plate boundary
Divergence
Lower silicates and gas content in magma
Continuous eruption, pressure release
Calmer eruption - gas and lava
Runny basaltic lava, gentle slope, shorter volcano
What is the Benioff zone?
It is an area of seismicity / slab moving downwards
The speed and movement of the rock produces earthquakes
