Q

Lava flows:

A
  • Molten magma on the earths surface is so hot, it flows
  • Viscosity determined by the amount of silicon dioxide
  • Buildings can be burnt and covered if it’s runny

Q

Gas / steam emissions:

A

H20 vapour : heavy rainfall events, then potentially lahars
So2: forms very fine particles that get into the stratosphere. These can cause acid rain (which corrodes buildings and affects vegetation)
Fluorine: gas is poisonous in high concentrations and contaminates farmland or water supply
Co2 - need 700/eruptions a year to match human cause emissions

Q

Ash / tephra

A

Carried high into the atmosphere
Most ash falls locally, causing roofs to collapse, choke machinery and electronics, breathing difficulties for people and animals, buried crops and vegetations
It can disrupt flight path of planes
