A
  • reform of the legal system
  • in old regime, exec., judicial and legislative powers all vested in monarch, judicial offices were purchased from monarch, different court system for each class
  • now, judges had to have 5 years of legal experience and were elected for 6 year periods
  • seigneurial court was replaced with justices of the peace who could arbitrate matters
  • Public Prosecutor was appointed by king for life
  • everyone now had the right to die by guillotine, whereas previously it was reserved for nobility

Reform of the military

A
  • previously, only those of noble birth on their father’s side for 4 generations could become officers
  • now, army was open to men of talent who could climb as high as their abilities took them
  • tricolour became national flag, pay was raised for common soldiers
  • however, new army was just the old one under a new flag, ‘officered by nobles known for their unquestioning loyalty to the king’ - Doyle

  • Economic Reform
  • the decree providing for a uniform tariff abolished the aides, octrois, traits and consummation taxes, along with royal salt and tobacco monopolies
  • replaced by a single uniform tariff on imports and exports
