This image depicts revolutionary leader Jean-Paul Marat, whose goal was to wipe out the greedy and corrupt French aristocracy, and was responsible for the execution by guillotine of hundreds of people.
Because of a painful skin illness, he spent his days in the bathtub and would receive people there.
He was stabbed to death by a woman who was angry about his excesses with the guillotine.
David has depicted Marat as a martyr
