160 clopidogrel (plavix) Flashcards
Therapeutic classification
Antiplatelet agent
Pharmacologic classification
ADP receptor blocker
Mechanism of action
Inhibits ADP receptors on platelets and prolongs bleeding time by irreversibly inhibiting platelet aggregation
indications
reduce risk of CVA/MI, reduce thrombolytic events post-CVA/MI, prevent DVT, prevent thrombi formation
precautions
high risk of bleeding, severe hepatic disease
contraindications
active bleeding
drug interactions
increased risk of bleeding with anticoagulants, antiplatelets thrombolytic agents and NSAIDs; diminished antiplatelet actioins with drugs that inhibit hepatic metabolic enzymes; increased anticoagulant activity with drugs that increase hepatic metabolic enzymes
pregnancy category
B
adverse effects
flu-like syndrome, headache, diarrhea, dizziness, bruising, URTI (upper resp. tract infeciton), rash, puriti, serious effect: abnormal bleeding
nursing considerations
assess current use of anticoagulants and NSAIDs, assess for increased bleeding risk, moniter for bleeding, evaluate unexpained fever/infection
teaching
immediately report bleeding, know it may take longer to stop bleeding, do not stop taking drug, do not use NSAIDs or OTC meds or supplements, inform dentist
Antidote
irreversible action
common route
PO
