Photoelectric effect
A photon of the correct amount of energy can cause an electron to gain energy or be completely removed from the atom’s orbit
Energy Level
The space an electron is most likely to be found at a discrete amount of energy away from the nucleus given by the principal quantum number n=1,2,3,4,5, or 6
Ionization Energy
Energy required to remove an electron from a gaseous atom or ion
Shell
Atomic orbitals with the same principal quantum number, or same energy level
Subshell
Atomic orbitals designated by the letters s, p, d, or f
Spectroscopy
The ecperimental process where excited electrons are detected by the wavelengths of light released as they return to the ground state
Effective Nuclear Charge
Charge that leads to Coulomb force exerted by the nucleus on an electron, calculated as the nuclear charge minus shielding
