1.2 Flashcards
Average Atomic Mass
Weighted average of isotopes of an element found in nature
Isotope
Atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons and therefore, different masses
Mass Spectrum
A bar graph of the relative abundance of different masses of atoms or molecules in a sample
Relative Abundance
Percentage of each kind of object in a sample. In a mass spectrum, these are separated by mass
Ionization
The use of electrons or energy to strip electrons off an atom or molecule, creating a positively charged particle
Electric Field
An area experiencing a charge difference where a positively charged particle will experience a force pushing it in the direction of the field
Magnetic Field
An area in the presence of a magnet where the pole of the magnet will exert a force on a charged particle, current-carrying wire, or ferromagnetic material
