15Chapter 5: Histology Flashcards
What are the 3 embryonic tissues?
- ectoderm (outer)
- mesoderm
- endoderm (inner)
Where do u find epithelial tissue?
- covers body surface,
- lines body cavities,
- forms external and internal linings of many organs, mostly glandular tissue
Are there blood vessels and/or extracellular materials (ECM) in epithelial tissue?
no blood vessels
very little ECM
What are the two broad categories with epithelial tissue?
simple and stratified
What are the 4 types of epithelia in each category names for shapes of cells?
- squamous
- cuboidal
- columnar
- pseudostratified (or other)
What is connective tisssue (CT) made of?
mostly matrix= GS and fibers with widely separated cells
What are the 5 classifications of CT?
- fibrous
- adipose
- cartilage
- bone
- fluid
What are the functions of CT? give an example.
- Bind organs. ex. tendons bind muscle to bone
- Support. ex. bones support the body
- Immune protection. ex. CT cells attack foreign invaders
- Movement. ex. bones provide lever system for body movement.
- Storage. ex. fat is energy reserve, bone reservoir of Ca+ and PO4^3-.
- Transport. ex. blood transports gases, nutrients, wastes, etc.
Where is transitional epithelium found?
Urinary system
What covers the external surface of the stomach?
a serosa
A seminiferous tubule of the testis is lined with ______ epithelium.
stratified cuboidal
________ prevent fluid from seeping between epithelial cells.
Tight junction
What does a fixative serve to do?
stop tissue decay
What produces collagen of areolar tissue?
fibroblasts
Tendons are composed of ______ connective tissue.
dense regular
