1.5 - ATP Flashcards
1
Q
Name the components of an ATP molecule and draw a diagram
A
- adenine molecule
- ribose molecule
- 3 phosphate groups
2
Q
What does ATP stand for?
A
adenosine triphosphate
3
Q
Write the equation for the hydrolysis of ATP and name the enzyme that catalyses this reaction
A
ATP + water + energy -> ADP + Pi
ATP hydrolase
4
Q
What can inorganic phosphates be used for?
A
phosphorylation of other compounds to make them more reactive
5
Q
Write the equation for the synthesis of ATP and name the enzyme that catalyses this reaction
A
ADP + Pi -> ATP + water + energy
ATP synthase
NB: occurs during photosynthesis/respiration
6
Q
Name the advantageous properties of ATP
A
- immediate source of energy (more desirable than glucose) = can be broken down in a single step to release manageable quantity of energy
- not stored in large quantities = can easily be reformed in seconds
- used in a variety of ways e.g AT, metabolic process, activation of molecules etc.
