14A Flashcards
ἆρ᾽ οὖν ἐάσετε, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασται, τὴν Νέαιραν ταύτην αἰσχρῶς και ὀλιγώρως ὑβριζειν εἰς την πὀλιν, ἣν οὔτε οἱ προγονοι ἀστὴν κατέλιπον, οὒθ᾽ ὁ δῆμος πολῖτιν ἐποιήσατο;
Will you, gentlemen of the jury, allow this Neaira to insult the city so shamefully and contemptuously, who was neither left a citizen by her parents nor was made a citizen by the people?
ἆρ᾽ ἐάσετε αὐτην ἀσεβειν εἰς τούς θεους ἀτιμώρητον, ἣ περιφανῶς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ Ἑλλάδι πεπορνευται;
Will you allow her to act irreverently towards the gods unavenged, her who has openly prostituted herself throughout the whole of Greece?
ποῦ γὰρ αὕτη οὐκ εἴργασται τῷ σώματι; ἢ ποῖ οὐκ ἐλήλυθεν ἐπι τῷ καθ᾽ἡμέρας μισθῷ;
For where has she not worked with her body? Or where has she not gone for her day-to-day earnings?
ἆρα τὴν Νέαιραν περιφανῶς ἐγνωσμένην ὑπὸ πάντων τοιαύτην οὖσαν ψηφιεῖσθε ἀστην εἶναι;
Now that Neaira is clearly known by all as the kind of woman she is, will you vote that she is to be a citizen?
και τί καλὸν φήσετε πρὸς τους ἐρωτῶντας διαπεπραχθαι, οὕτω ψηφισαμενοι;
And if you vote in this way, what fine thing will you say that you have accomplished to those who ask you?
For her crimes existed, and the city was indifferent to her crimes. before this woman was charged by me and brought to trial before all of you found out who she was and what sort of impiety she had committed.
ἐπειδη δε πεπυσθε και ἴστε ὑμεις παντες, και κυριοι ἐστε κολασαι, ἀσεβησετε και ὑμεις αὐτοι προς τους θεους, ἐαν μη ταυτην κολασητε.
But, since you have found out and since you all know, and since you are able to punish her, you yourselves will be acting impiously towards the gods if you do not punish this woman.
