Question 1

Βουλομαι δ᾽ὑμιν παρεχειν ἐτεραν μαρτυριαν του τε Φραστορος και των φρατερων αὐτου και των γεννητων, ὠς ἐστι ξενη Νεαιρα αὐτηι.

Answer 1

I want to provide you with another piece of evidence from Phrastor and the members of his phratry and of his clan that this Neaira is an alien.

οὐ πολλῳ χρονῶ γαρ ὑστερον ἢ ἐξεπεμφθη ἡ της Νεαιρας θυγατηρ, ἠσθενησεν ὁ Φραστωρ και πανυ πονηρως διετεθη και εἰς πασαν ἀποριαν κατεστη.

Answer 2

For not long after Neaira’s daughter was divorced, Phrastor fell ill and was very poorly and was in total need.

και, πριν αὐτον ἀσθενειν, προς τους οἰκειους αὐτου διαφορα ἦν παλαια και ὀργη και μισος.

Answer 3

Before he was ill there had been a long-standing disagreements with his relatives, and anger and hatred.

Question 4

και ἀπαις ἦν Φραστωρ. ἀλλ᾽εἰς ἀποριαν καταστας, ὑπο τε της Νεαιρας και της Φανους ἐψυχαγωγειτο.

Answer 4

And Phrastor was childless. But in his state of need he was won over by Neaira and Phano.

ἐβαδιζον γαρ προς αὐτον, ὡς θεραπευσουσαι και προθυμως ἐπιμελησομεναι

Answer 5

For they went to him, to look after him and to care for him enthusiatically

Question 6

(ἐρημος δε των θεραπευσοντων ἦν Φραστωρ), και ἐφερον τα προσφορα τῃ νοσῳ και ἐπεσκοπουντο.

Answer 6

(For Phrastor was lacking people who would look after him), and they brought remedies (things useful) for the illness and visited him.

Question 7

ιστε δηπου και ὑμεις αὐτοι, ὠ ανδρες δικασται, ὡς ἀξια πολλου ἐστι γυνη ἐν ταις νοσοις, παρουσα καμνοντι ἀνθρωπω.

Answer 7

I am sure you know yourselves, jurors, how valuable is a woman in time of sickness when she is at the side of a man who is suffering with illness. (lit being with illness)

Question 8

τουτο οὐν ποιουσων αὐτων, ἐπεισθη Φραστωρ, πριν ὑγιαινειν, παλιν λαβειν το της Φανους παιδιον και ποησασθαι υἱον αὑτου.

Answer 8

Since they were doing this, Phrastor was persuaded, before he got better, to take back Phano’s child and to make him his son.

τουτο δε το παιδιον ἐτεκε Φανω ὁτε ἐξεπεμφθη ὑπο του Φραστορος κυουσα.

Answer 9

This was the child which Phano had borne when she had been sent away in a pregnant state by Phrastor.

Question 10

και πριν ὑγιαινειν, ὑπεσχετο δη τουτο ποιησειν ὁ Φραστωρ, λογισμον ἀνθροπινον και ἐοικοτα λογιζομενος, ὁτι πονηρως μεν ἐχει και οὐκ ἐλιζει περιγενησεσθαι,

Before he got better, Phrastor promised that he would do this, making the natural and reasonable calculation that he was in poor condition and did not expect to survive,

ἐβουλετο δε αναλαβειν το της Φανους παιδιον πριν ἀποθανειν (καιπερ εἰδως αὐτον οὐ υνησιον ὀντα),

but he wanted to take back Phano’s child before he died (although he knew that he was not legitimate),

οὐκ ἐθελων τους οἰκειους λαβειν τα αὐτου, οὐδ᾽ἀπαις ἀποθανειν.

Answer 12

since he did not want his relations to inherit his property, nor did he want to die without a child.

Question 13

εἰ υαρ ἀπαις ἀπεθανε Φραστωρ, οἱ οἰκειοι ἐλαβον ἂν το αὐτου.

Answer 13

For if Phrastor had died without a child, his relatives would have taken his property.
