Name the two main functions of the pancreas.
- An exocrine gland
- An endocrine gland
Describe the pancreas’ role as an exocrine gland.
Produces digestive enzymes and pancreatic juice.
These are secreted into ducts which lead to the pancreatic duct.
From there, they are released into the duodenum.
What is the duodenum?
The top part of the small intestine.
What three main enzymes does the pancreas produce, and what do they break down?
Amalyse- starch into simple sugars
Protease- proteins into amino acids
Lipase- lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
Describe the pancreas’ role as an endocrine gland.
The endocrine glandular tissue contains small regions of a tissue called islets of Langerhans.
There are two types of islets of Langerhans:
a cells- produce glucagon
B cells- produce insulin
Are Beta or alpha islets of Langerhan darker?
alpha
What are the exocrine pancreas cells that surround the islets of Langerhan called?
Secretory acini
