Q

Define transition altitude

A

The altitude at or below which vertical position of an
aircraft is normally controlled by reference to Altitude.
Wherever possible there is a common Transition
Altitude for aerodromes in a control zone.

Unless otherwise notified the Transition Altitude
for civil aerodromes in the UK is 3000ft.
However, within controlled airspace the TA is
usually either 5000ft or 6000ft.
UK AIP ENR contains full details on the TA for
units that differ from 3000.
