What are civil liberties?
The rights enjoyed by citizens which protect them from the unfair treatment from the government or state
What are residual rights?
The rights citizens expect to have unless prohibited by law
What is an active citizenship?
The idea that members of a nation have a responsibility towards their community
What is a ‘rights based culture’?
Where individuals and communities know their rights
What is a judicial review?
A process where the courts reviews decisions made by the state or public bodies
What is judicial precedent?
A process where the courts follow previously decided cases to determine the outcome of the present one
How did the Magna Carta protect human rights?
First big development of human rights. Gave citizens of a country the right to a fair trial as well as ‘habeas corpus’, this right to a trial.
Also ensured no one was above the law, even the monarch
How did the Human Rights Act 1998 protect human rights?
The HRA brought into effect the ECHR which was established by the Council of Europe in 1950.
Establishes a wide range of rights to replace common law in the UK
How did the Freedom of Information Act 2000 protect human rights?
Gave citizens the right to see information about them held by public bodies.
Become a valuable tool for social and political campaigners and the media
How did the Equality Act 2010 protect human rights?
An act that ensured that all legislation made by the government must take into account formal equality for different sections of society.
What are the strengths of rights in the UK?
- strong common law tradition
- subject to the ECHR
- judiciary has a reputation for being independent and upholding the rule of law even against the wishes of the government

- to obey the law

What are 3 disputed citizen responsibilities ?
- to serve in armed forces when country is under attack
- to vote in elections
- to respect the rights of other citizens

The right for the community to be free from terrorism through security services
