1.4 Diffusion Flashcards
Name 3 factors that affect diffusion.
- temperature
- concentration
- surface area
How does temperature affect diffusion?
The higher the temperature of the particles, the more energy they have so they move and mix faster
How does concentration affect diffusion?
The steeper the concentration gradient, the quicker the rate of diffusion
How does surface area affect diffusion?
The higher the surface area, the more diffusion can happen at once
Name an adaptation that cells have that increase the rate of diffusion.
They have a cell membrane folded on at least one side to increase the surface area
What determines the net movement of particles across a cell membrane?
The concentration on either side of the membrane
Name 3 examples of diffusion.
- oxygen into the cells of the body from the bloodstream as the cells are restoring and using up oxygen
- carbon dioxide into actively photosynthesising plant cells
- simple sugars and amino acids from the gut through cell membranes
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles of a gas or a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration as a result of the random movement of particles
