1.4 - Cell Membrane Flashcards
Terms to know
Cell Membrane
A protective barrier around the cell composed of a phospholipid bilayer that regulates which materials can pass in or out
Extracellular Fluid
The fluid on the exterior of the cell
Glycocalyx
A fuzzy-appearing coating around the cell formed from glycoproteins and other carbohydrates attached to the cell membrane which function in cell recognition communication or enzymatic activity
Glycoprotein
A protein that has carbohydrate molecules attached to the external side (glyco-glucose)
Integral Membrane Protein
A protein that is permanently embedded in the cell membrane
Interstitial Fluid
Extracellular fluid not contained within blood vessels
Intracellular Fluid
The fluid on the interior of the cellL
Ligand
A specific molecule that can be bound by a receptor initiating a chemical reaction inside the cell
Peripheral Protein
A membrane protein located on the inner or outer surface of the phospholipid bilayer but can also be attached to the internal or external surface of an integral protein
Receptor
A type of transmembrane protein that can selectively bind a specific molecule (ligand) on the outside of the cell and induce a chemical reaction inside the cell
Transmembrane Protein
One type of integral membrane protein which is exposed on both the internal and external side of the cell membrane
