1.2 - Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Terms to know
Activation Energy
The energy required by a chemical reaction for reactants to become their product(s)
Anabolic reaction
Chemical reactions that create chemical bonds by joining smaller molecules together to form larger molecules
Catabolic reaction
Chemical reactions that break down chemical bonds and create smaller molecules by breaking apart one or more larger molecules
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of chemical reaction without itself undergoing any change
Chemical Energy
Energy stored in chemical bonds
Chemical reaction
The process of producing or breaking down chemical bonds
Decomposition Reaction
A chemical reaction that breaks down something larger into its constituent parts
Endergonic Reaction
A chemical reaction that absorbs more energy than it releases
Enzyme
A biological catalyst composed of protein or ribonucleic acid (RNA) that functions to lower the activation energy of a chemical reaction
Exchange Reaction
A chemical reaction in which both synthesis and decomposition occur, chemical bonds are both formed and broke and chemical energy is absorbed, stored, and released
Exergonic Reaction
A chemical reaction that releases more energy than it absorbs
Free Energy Diagram
A diagram indicating the amount of energy present at any time throughout the chemical reaction
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions
Product
One or more substances produced by a chemical reaction
Reactant
One or more substances that enter into the reaction and are changed
