1.3 - Inorganic Compounds: Acids, Bases, and pH Flashcards
Terms to know
Acid
A substance with a pH reading below 7 that releases hydrogen ions (H^+) in solution
Acidosis
Excessive acidity of the blood and other body fluids below pH 7.35
Alkalosis
Excessive alkalinity of the blood and other body fluids above pH 7.45
Base
A substance with a pH reading above 7 that releases hydroxyl ions (OH^-) in solution or one that accepts H^+ already present in solution
Buffer
A solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base that can neutralize small amounts of acids or bases by binding or contributing hydrogen ions (H^+) and thereby maintaining the overall pH of the solution
Neutral
A pH reading of 7 that of pure water
pH
A measure of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration of the solution that ranges from 0 to 14
