1.2 - Elements and Atoms: The building Blocks of Matter Flashcards
Definitions of important terms
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that retains the unique properties of that element
Atomic mass
The average mass number of all atoms of a given element
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Chemical Symbol
The one or two letter abbreviation used to represent an element
Electron
Negatively charged subatomic particles that are located in the electron cloud of an atom
Electron Cloud
The area outside of the nucleus where electrons are located
Element
A pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means
Mass
The amount of matter contained in an object
Mass Number
A whole number representing the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Neutron
Neutral (non-charged) subatomic particles that have mass and are located in the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus (atom)
The center of an atom where protons and neutrons are located
Periodic Table of Elements
A reference table of all known elements arranged by atomic number
Proton
Positively charged subatomic particles that have mass and are located in the nucleus of an atom
Subatomic Particle
The particles (protons, neutrons, electrons) that make up the parts of an atom
