1.3 - Organic Compounds: Lipids Flashcards
Terms to know
Cholesterol
A steroid that functions in lipid metabolism, hormone production, and the structure and function of the cell
Fatty Acid
A hydrocarbon chain with a carboxyl group and a methyl group at opposite ends
Glycerol
A three-carbon molecule to which fatty acids and/or phosphate groups attach to form lipids
Hormone
A signaling molecule that the body releases to regulate processes at distant sites
Lipid
A macromolecule primarily made of hydrophobic hydrocarbons that are unable to form a solution
Monounsaturated Fatty Acid
A fatty acid whose carbon skeleton contains one carbon double bond and is liquid at room temp
Phospholipid
A lipid formed by a glycerol two fatty acids and a phosphate group which plays a role in cell structure
Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid
A fatty acid whose carbon skeleton contains two or more carbon double bonds and is liquid at room temperature
Prostoglandin
A signaling molecule in the body derived from unsaturated fatty acids
Saturated Fatty Acid
A fatty acid whose carbon skeleton contains only single bonds (no double bonds) between carbon atoms and is solid or semi-solid at room temperature
Steroid
A lipid composed of four hydrocarbon rings
Trans Fatty Acid
An unsaturated fatty acid whose carbon skeleton has been chemically altered to be straight and is solid at room temperature
Triglyceride
A storage form of lipid formed by a glycerol and three fatty acids
