13.Key science skills Flashcards
what is qualitative data
qualitative data is descriptions e.g colour and is represented as a bar graph
-is discontinuous data
what is quantitative data
quantitative data is numerical e.g 10 seconds and is represented with a bar graph
-is continuous data
define independent variable
the independent variable is a factor that is changed or manipulated in an experiment to determine its effect on the dependent variable
define dependent variable
the dependent variable is measured to determine if the change or manipulation of the independent variable had any effect
define controlled variable
a controlled variable is one that is kept constant throughout the experiment
what is reliability
the ability to obtain the same result if an experiment is repeated
what is precision
how close results are to each other
what is reproducibility
if a different experimenter can reach the same conclusions by repeating a similar experiment
what is accuracy
how close the measurement is to the true value
what is validity
refers to whether experimental results can be logically linked to the conclusions formed
-invalid results are often unable to adequately control variables
what is beneficence
the commitment of maximising benefits and minimising risks and harms involved
what is non maleficence
involves avoiding causations of harm, harm should not be disproportionate to benefits
what is repeatability
measures the variation in measurements taken by a single instrument or person under the same conditions
