what are the 2 main functions of levers?
-generate muscular effort to overcome given load
-increase speed of a given movement
what is the load?
weight or resistance
what is the effort?
muscular force applied at the insertion
what is the fulcrum?
joint
what is the effort arm?
distance from fulcrum to effort
what is the load arm?
distance from load to fulcrum
what advantage does a greater effort arm have over the load arm?
large load can be moved with relatively small effort
(over a small range of motion)
eg 2nd class lever in ankle
what mechanical disadvantage does a greater load arm have over the effort arm?
large effort required for a relatively small load
eg 3rd class lever in bicep curl
how to remember order of classes?
