13.6 Oogenesis and Ovulation Flashcards
When/where does oogenesis begin?
prenatally in the ovary of the female fetus
What phases do oogonia undergo in utero?
mitosis and first phase of meiosis
When are primary oocytes arrested in utero?
prophase I
What will stimulate completion of the first meiotic division of the primary oocyte?
hormonal changes in womans body during puberty
What forms after the completion of the first meiotic division during puberty?
secondary oocyte and a small polar body
When does the second meiotic division of oogenesis occur and what forms?
when the oocyte is fertilized by sperm; results in large ovum and second polar body
What are granulosa cells?
clump of cells that surround the primary oocytes
What is a follicle?
entire structure containing the primary oocyte and granulosa cells
What is the primordial follicle?
immature oocyte surrounded by granulosa cells
What is the zona pellucida?
the protective layer the oocyte forms after the primordial follicle matures
What are thecal cells?
cells that surround and separate several follicles in the ovary
What is the Graafian follicle?
mature follicle
What happens to the Graafian follicle during ovulation?
bursts releasing the secondary oocyte, zona pellucida, and granulosa cells into the fallopian tubes
What is secreted during the first half of the menstrual cycle and where is it secreted?
estrogen is secreted by granulosa and thecal cells
What is secreted during the second half of the menstrual cycle and where is it secreted?
estrogen and progesterone; secreted by the corpus luteum
